IN DEVELOPMENT

Most popular histories of American Indians end in 1890 with the massacre at Wounded Knee. But the stories of more than 500 Native American nations didn’t stop 115 years ago at a bloody creek in South Dakota. Far from it. From the birth of the reservations to the birth of Foxwoods, the original Americans have survived and even thrived over the last century.

Native Century, a four-hour series directed by Chris Eyre (Smoke Signals, Skins), will be a passionate, vivid rendering of Native American history in the century after Wounded Knee. This is a tale of tragedy and triumph, a richly detailed chronicle of how, against all odds, Native Americans have sustained ancient traditions and preserved sovereign nations while adapting to the 20th and 21st centuries.
